As the closest island to the African continent, Boa Vista is only 500 km away, covering approximately 600 km², making it the third largest island in the Cape Verde archipelago. Known for its flat terrain similar to Sal Island, Boa Vista boasts some of the largest and arguably the best beaches in all of Cape Verde. The highest point on the island is Pico da Estância, standing at 300 meters high and offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

Boa Vista's origins lie in volcanic activity, making it one of the oldest islands in the archipelago. Its flat landscape is a result of thousands of years of erosion, creating a unique desert-like environment that spans 55 kilometers of white sandy beaches and crystal clear blue waters. The eastern part of the island is a haven for nature lovers, home to a diverse range of wildlife including sea turtles, marine bird colonies, dunes, and unique plant species.

Despite its arid climate and sparse population, Boa Vista is teeming with natural wonders such as oases, palm groves, and a variety of marine life that thrive in its pristine waters. The strong winds from the northeast create ideal conditions for water sports enthusiasts and contribute to the island's unique ecosystem.

Embrace the magic of Boa Vista, where the untouched landscapes and warm hospitality will leave you enchanted. Discover the best of both worlds on this golden island, where the serene beauty of the desert meets the stunning beaches of the coast.  Start your journey today and let Boa Vista capture your heart and soul.

Discover Curral Velho on Boa Vista, Cape Verde

Along the southern coast of Boa Vista lies the ghostly village of Curral Velho. The old fishing village is deserted, and you will only find ruins today. Curral Velho is the oldest settlement of Boa Vista, dating back to the 17th century. Wander between the dilapidated ruins of the old buildings and then enjoy the nearby beach, Praia de Curral Velho, a beautiful unspoiled stretch of sand.

Origin of the Ruins of Curral Velho

Life in the fishing village was challenging in the past. Curral Velho was remote, and the southern coast was difficult to reach. Fresh drinking water was scarce, especially during the dry season. In addition to fishing, there was also a trade in salt. A large salt flat near Curral Velho facilitated the salt trade to other Cape Verde islands and the mainland. The village was abandoned around the 19th century due to the endless drought and attacks from pirates, prompting most inhabitants to move to Ribeira Grande, the largest town in Boa Vista.

Flora and Fauna

The deserted area around the ruins, the coast, and the nearby small island Ilhéu de Curral Velho are essential habitats for birds and turtles. It is also an internationally recognized wetland area for birdlife. The majestic Frigatebird, with a wingspan of up to 2 meters and the distinctive red throat pouch of the males, can be spotted here. The wetland of Curral Velho is an ideal destination for nature lovers to spend a day, offering a chance to connect with the local wildlife in one of the most serene settings.

How to Get to the Ruins of Curral Velho

Curral Velho is located on the south coast of Boa Vista, about 15 kilometers from the nearest village. From the town of Sal Rei, you can reach Curral Velho within an hour by jeep (approximately 43 kilometers). South of the village of Rabil, head towards Fundo das Figueiras. From here, it is an hour's drive through a unique landscape that feels like you're on the moon. Curral Velho is also accessible from the villages of Povoação Velha and Cabeço das Tarafas. It is essential to drive a 4×4 vehicle to navigate the rugged terrain safely.

A Journey into History and Nature

A visit to Curral Velho offers not only a glimpse into the history of the Cape Verde archipelago but also a retreat into unspoiled nature. The unique sand dunes, gentle sea breezes, and the profound silence provide a sense of infinity and tranquility. This location, where time seems to have stood still, offers an oasis of peace and inspiration.

Besides its historical allure, Curral Velho invites you to explore the surrounding natural beauty. The unbroken beaches and crystal-clear waters are perfect for relaxing sunbathing and swimming. For bird watchers, it's a paradise with countless opportunities to observe migratory birds.
